Street Art Tour With Alternative London

A few weeks ago I was invited by Joe Blogs to join a street art tour of East London with Alternative London. We met at 11am outside Shoreditch High Street station, though someone (me!) was 15 minutes late, so we were a little delayed with our start (sorry guys!).

The tour was led by Doug who we followed around the back streets of East London. He explained to us the difference between graffiti and street art (street artists do it more to make a statement, get an emotional response from the public) whilst showing us some of the best alternative pieces. He also took the time during the tour to check-in with us all individually and gave us some tips for shooting art or just the streets in general (symmetry is key!).

We were blessed with the perfect walking tour weather which lasted the whole of our 90 minute tour. Street art isn’t just paint on walls. It comes in many forms; mosaics, pasted posters, paper butterflies, metal armour super-duper glued to walls, wooden blocks around lampposts, mirrors, and even dead pigeon wings covered in cement. Some are more colourful than others, and some are especially difficult to spot, unless you are specifically looking for them.

Doug also showed us some places that featured no street art. Places that actually are better off without it. It’s rare to find untouched areas, especially in East London. Our last stop was Columbia Road, which was far emptier than most people are used to seeing. This was a prime time to capture some of the colourful shopfronts, and for me to practice on my symmetry.

Our tour finished at their HQ where we were welcomed with sweet lemonades and mini printers, all set up and ready for us to print out a couple of our own shots from the tour. They were printed out like polaroids and the backs peel off so they can be stuck practically anywhere!

A big thank you to Alternative London (especially Doug) for the brilliant tour, to Currys and HP for the use of their printers, and to Joe Blogs for the invite. I had such a great day doing something different!

* I was invited along to take the Street Art Tour for free, but rest assured, all words and opinions are my own 🙂

  1. This sounds like a great walking tour – I always wonder about the meaning behind some of the street art in Shoreditch and a lot of it I’m sure I walk past without even realising its there! x
