We’ve had 1 day of sunshine here in London and it’s got me seriously dreaming about summer. Don’t get me wrong, I love winter, what with being a December baby and preferring to get snuggled under layers of cashmere jumpers. Regardless, the fact that Spring is almost definitely (finally!!) here, it’s got me excited for drinks outside and seaside trips. So, I thought I’d put together a quick list of some essential items to get you ready for summer. Might as well plan early, especially if you’re British as our summers don’t tend to last too long. It’ll be back to grey skies and drizzling streets in no time!
1. Embroidered ANYTHING!!
You’ve probably noticed in the shops lately clothing and shoes being taken over by pretty embroidery. It’s set to be the big trend of SS17. You can take your pick of fashion items; jeans, trainers, shirts, denim jackets and even leather jackets!
Of course, with the arrival of sunshine, you’re going to need some sunglasses to protect those peepers of yours. The more colourful and decorative, the better. Firmoo have a great collection at really affordable prices. I particularly love these pink ones.
3. Garden furniture
I know, I know, I’ve just moved into a flat without a garden, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be spending at least a couple of relaxing weekends in my Aunt’s garden having summer drinks with my cousins. She actually owns a rattan table and chair set much like this one from Fishpools, and they’ve plenty more dining sets to choose from. It’s great because it all fits together into one cube so it’s easy to clear out of the way if you need space for a family badminton tournament. It’s also waterproof so you don’t need to worry about having to find somewhere to store it indoors when you get caught out by the inevitable British summer showers, just remember to grab any pillows on your way in!
4. Freezer Cocktails
Talking of drinking outside, you’ll definitely want some ice-cold cocktails to enjoy from the comfort of your new garden furniture once it really starts to heat up. You can find these Parrot Bay pouches that you can keep in the freezer at most supermarkets. So when you fancy, say, a slushy daiquiri, just take a pouch out of the freezer, smoosh it up a bit, snip off the top and squeeze into your desired glass. Add some cheap paper umbrellas and pretend you’re at a tropical resort and not just sat in your Aunt’s garden in West London.
5. Ultimate summer playlist
Nothing gets me in the mood for summer more than the perfect summer soundtrack. One of my go-to albums when the sun starts to shine is Jack Johnson’s In Between Dreams. His ukulele playing brings to mind Hawaii and makes me feel all relaxed and nonchalant. Spotify is a great place for finding playlists for all types of mood; whether you want a pool party type of playlist filled with Rihanna and Beyonce, or chill out summer tunes, you’ll find the playlist for you.
