* I was invited to Whittard Chelsea for free, but rest assured, all words and opinions are my own 🙂
Nestled in the heart of Covent Garden, you’ll find Whittard‘s tea room, and it’s here that my bestie & I celebrated our stronger than cement friendship with their afternoon tea!
Whittard have quite the extensive menu, and our first decision was which type of afternoon tea to go for. It all depends on what you prefer, between sandwiches, scones, savouries, and cakes. Each afternoon tea type has a different variation and comes with a pot of tea, so if there are 2 of you, you can each pick your own afternoon tea and your own pot of tea. We both went for The Whittard Tea, their signature afternoon tea which you can book at £30 per person. It came with a selection of sandwiches, freshly baked scones (they were still warm!) and cakes.
But first, the tea! With a menu of over 100 different flavours, and a table of 2 of the most indecisive girls, it took us a while to choose, but the staff were extremely helpful. We were both after something sweet. I went for the Tropical Punch flavoured green tea, and Jess, the Toffee Apple flavoured fruit infusion. We were each presented with a teapot & a little timer that signalled when we needed to take our tea leaves out of the pot. Now, the strange thing is, when it was finally time for me to try my tea, all I could taste was hot water, Jess however, could pinpoint all the flavours of my tropical concoction, and it just so happened that she didn’t really like her toffee apple tea, but I loved it. So we swapped, and were very happy with each others tea choices.
When our cake stand arrived, it was chokablok full of delicious goodies! We started with the sandwiches. Our selection consisted of cucmber, egg & cress, coronation chicken, and smoked salmon with lemon cheese. All the classic afternoon tea flavours, and all very tasty, but nothing that’s not been done at most afternoon teas. The scones though, 5 star. Fresh out the oven with a generous helping of cream for each of us, and orange jam made using tea preserves. I need to go back just for a big ole jar of the jam. Seriously so good!
If you pick one of their afternoon teas that comes with cakes, you get to decide whether you want 5 of their small bite-sized sweet treats OR 2 slices of their full-sized bakes. Since we both picked the Whittard Tea that meant we could pick the selection of mini cakes, AND 2 slices of their larger cakes. The mini lemon & passionfruit tart and the mini raspberry chocolate brownie were the highlights for us, though there wasn’t a bad cake on that plate! For our big slices, Jess chose the carrot cake, with it’s super creamy frosting, and I of course went for the very colourful rainbow cake, which was brand new that week to their counter. If you’ve got a sweet tooth like me, you’ll love it!
Before we left, we got the chance to pick out some gifts for each other from the shop. Typically, we both picked the same beautiful yellow mug. I can’t wait to use mine along with the peanut butter hot chocolate Jess also picked for me. I also picked an Alice in Wonderland tea tidy for my bestie to take home.
A big thank you goes to Whittard for the invite, and an even bigger thank you to the staff that day for their wonderful knowledge and extreme patience with all our questions & indecisiveness.
