For those of you who watched Britain’s Got Talent last night, you most likely caught the exciting new Walkers advert featuring everyone’s favourite 90’s girl group, The Spice Girls. For those of you who didn’t, fret not, as you can watch it below!
The return of the Spice Girls has got me reminiscing about all the times they’ve popped up in my life, in one way or another, over the past 23 years. I of course had my walls plastered in their posters, had them on every single piece of clothing you could image (yes, even socks & knickers!), owned all 5 of the Spice Girls dolls, all their CDs & videos, countless fact books on the girls, I ate all the sweets they were featured on and I even collected all the stickers in the collectable book (remember the stickers would come in packs of 5 and you could buy them from the local corner shop).
My first ever concert was seeing the Spice Girls live at the old (now demolished) Wembley Stadium in 1998. We got a coach package deal from my old hometown of Luton. I remember the support acts being 3 sisters girl group Cleopatra, and Abba tribute Björn Again. Unfortunately, Geri had already left at this point so I only got to see the 4 remaining Spices, but fast forward 10 years and I finally got to see all 5 live on stage when they announced their comeback in 2008.
Since then they’ve been popping into my life. There was that time I bumped into Geri Halliwell outside a theatre here in London. Then in the summer of 2012, back when I had the reddest of red hair, I dressed up as the lady herself for a Barbie VS Action Man themed house party we threw. That same summer, we headed to our local park to watch the Olympics closing ceremony on a big screen. As you can see from the photo below, we were very excited. I remember when they finally came on screen, us girls going absolutely berserk and my friend Luke looking at us like we were bonkers. I guess that’s just the affect the Spice Girls have on their fans. Even after all these years!
Last year I was lucky enough to be invited to Keswick Mountain Festival where Mel C was headlining the Saturday night. Again, I let my inner child out to sing and dance along, with strange looks from James. She was bloody amazing though, playing songs from her latest album, and of course some classic Spice Girl tunes, as well as some from her earlier solo career (I Turn To You was a real highlight!).
My final Spice memory that I’m going to share with you is from November last year. Lil Nan’s bar in Deptford announced they were having a sing-along Spiceworld: The Movie brunch, so me and the girls of course got all dressed up for the occasion. Milly was Baby in her pink dress & bunches, Erica was Scary in leopard print with space buns, I was Posh in my little black-ish (okay, dark blue) Gucci-ish (okay, Pilot charity shop find) dress, and Viki was Ginger with her naturally flamed hair & iconic Union Jack dress. Our outfits were so well planned, we ended up winning a £250 bar tap for our efforts!
I’d love to hear about your own Spice memories, or maybe there’s another artist that is always there. Let me know in the comments below 🙂
