* I was invited to Near & Far to dine for free through Love Pop Ups – London, but rest assured, all words and opinions are my own 🙂
Bar 6 Group opened their first Near & Far bar in Peckham late 2017. This was swiftly followed by another bar in Angel, and now, Camden! I popped along a couple of weeks ago to check out the new location.
We began the evening with a tour of the 4 levels, starting at the top with the rooftop. Due to the recent bad weather, it wasn’t quite finished & ready for guests yet, but we got a little sneaky peek. With the tiled floor and plenty of big, green plants about, I can see it being a hit over the summer! There are also heaters and an extendable roof, so I imagine it’ll be busy all year round. Next, we went all the way to the basement at the bottom to the ‘Womb Room’, so aptly named as it’s pink and cosy. This would be a great area to book for a night out with the girls! The rest of the place is decked out with tiki furniture & colourful walls.
My first cocktail of the evening was the Rum Like Clockwork, made up of spiced rum, hazelnut liqueur, oatmilk & a dash of cinnamon. So creamy! Next I went for the Tequila’d Pink with, you guessed it tequila, as well as homemade ginger liqueur, cranberry & citrus. This one was a lot lighter, and more refreshing than the previous, but just as delicious. Finally, I couldn’t quite decide on my third cocktail, so they suggested they make me something using my favourite spirit & flavours, and I was presented with a sweet & fruity rum based mango concoction.
The menu comes from Mexican street food vendor Elote and the best part is, it’s all completely gluten free! It’s split into 5 sections, starting with light bites. First up were some classic nachos topped with the perfect ratio of cheese, guacamole, salsa and jalapenos, followed by chickpea chips, which OH EM GEE, were amazing! Crispy on the outside and soft & creamy on the inside. They came with a tasty chipotle ketchup, which actually tasted like a lighter BBQ sauce with a hint of tomato. Then there was the cumin roasted cauliflower with a scrumptious walnut nogada which had the consistency of hummus, and it was speckled with tequila raisins! But the best dish has to be the Elote de Callejeros, Mexican chargrilled corn on the cob with melted cotija cheese. I’d go back just for another plate, it’s that good!
We then got to try the tamarind dressed crab Tostadas. Tamarind comes from the edible pulp of the fruit from a tree mostly found in tropical Africa. It came atop a refreshing avocado & cucumber salsa with a hint of habanero chilli. Next up, Ceviche. They have 2 types, and I was most excited to try the ceviche de Yucatan with lime cured white fish, coconut milk, spring onions, coriander & mint, but I found it a bit too citrus-y for me. The ceviche de Veracruz however, was so very moreish, with tomatoes, red onion, oregano & olives accompanying the lime cured white fish.
Finally, tacos! Elote’s fish tacos are very popular, with them even making it into Time Out’s top 50 London Street Food stall dishes. Made with fresh grilled archiote marinated coley, lime mayo & pico de gallo, it’s not hard to taste why! Absolutely delicious. Fish not your cuppa? They also make them in portobello mushroom, pulled pork or guajillo braised beef short rib varieties. The best bit about Near & Far is that every dish is under £10 (unless going for a larger portion), and did I mention, it’s all gluten free!
Near & Far is the perfect place for nights out with friends with the affordable prices and wide variety of dishes on the menu. So, who’s free next week?
